"NEWSPAPERS, THEN AND NOW"
Jim Belshaw, a popular metro journalist at the Albuquerque Journal for over 30 years, held forth before a large crowd at Nora Scherzinger’s home on January 15, 2016. He contrasted today’s digital world of computers, word processors, and social media with his world of typewriters, landline phone communication, and personal investigative reporting. Despite the present digital media accessibility of a worldwide audience, he showed that a niche market persists where, in small rural settings, the approach of focusing the content to the local readership and using earlier techniques still has its place.
But it was the response to a question about Jim’s relationship to his close friend Tony Hillerman that iced the cake of his presentation. Jim began relating a series of episodes with Tony that got the audience howling. They were quite humorous, but also also quite revealing of the unique person who was Tony Hillerman. All in all. a wonderful evening.
